| G-90 |
A coating weight for galvanized sheet metal, 0.90 ounces of zinc per sq. ft., measured on both sides of the sheet. |
| Gable |
A triangular-shaped portion of the endwall of a building directly under the sloping roof and above the Eave line. The shape of the gable and how it is detailed depends on the structural system being used (which is often related to climate and availability of materials) and aesthetic concerns. Thus the type of roof enclosing the volume dictates the shape of the gable. |
| Gable Roof |
A roof configuration that has gable ends. A gable roof is designed to come to a point in a triangular shape, whether the gable is seen on the front and rear of the house or on either side. |
| Gable-on-Hip Roof |
A roof configuration with hips coming up from the eave corners that terminate into a gable roof. A hipped roof in which the hips are not carried all the way to the ridge; instead, each end roof surface turns vertically near the top so as to form a small gable that is perpendicular to the ridge. |
| Galvalume |
Trade name for a protective coating composed of aluminum zinc. GALVALUME sheet steel is a 55% Al-Zn coated sheet steel product that is ideally suited for most types of roofing and siding applications as well as unexposed automotive parts, appliances and miscellaneous applications like furniture, outdoor cabinetry, computer cases, gutters, pipe, etc. |
| Galvanic Action |
A reaction between different metals in the presence of an electrolyte. When iron and steel are subject to conditions of aqueous corrosion the incidence and rate at which the corrosion takes place will alter if the steel is coupled with other metals or alloys that are also exposed to the electrolyte. Copper, brass, bronze, lead and nickel are more "noble" and act as auxiliary cathodes to the steel and accelerate its anodic dissolution, that is, its corrosion. Magnesium, zinc and zinc-base alloy are nearly always less noble and tend to divert the attack from the steel to themselves. The galvanic relationship of various metals is an important factor affecting corrosion. |
| Galvanize |
To coat with zinc. Now the term generally refers to an electrodeposition process used to add a thin layer of another metal to a ferrous substrate, in order to prevent rusting. More recently, though, the term has been broadened in common usage to include applying a protective metallic coating to an underlying piece of metal, using a process called hot-dip galvanization, which produces similar results, but which does not employ electrochemical deposition. |
| Galvanized Steel |
Steel that is coated with zinc to aid in corrosion resistance. Galvanized steel for use in roofing should be Hot-Dipped Galvanized with a G-90 coating. |
| Gambrel |
A roof that has two different pitches, usually-symmetrical two-sided roof with two slopes on each side. The upper slope is positioned at a shallow angle, while the lower slope is steep. |
| Gauge |
A standard of measurement. For instance the thickness of sheet metal or the diameter of wire. The thicker the wire or metal, the lower the gauge. |
| Gavel |
Aggregate consisting of rock fragments or pebbles |
| Gavel Stop |
A flanged, sheet metal edge flashing with an upward projection installed along the perimeter of a roof to stop the flow of bitumen over the edge. |
| Geodesic Dome |
A geodesic dome uses a pattern of self-bracing triangles in a pattern that gives maximum structural advantage, thus theoretically using the least material possible. (A "geodesic" line on a sphere is the shortest distance between any two points.) The first contemporary geodesic dome on record was designed by Walter Bauersfeld. |
| Girt |
A horizontal beam place between support columns that is used for attaching wall cladding. Girts provide lateral support to the wall panel. An equivalent element in roof construction is a purlin. Aliases (separate with |): Sheeting Rail
|
| Glass Felt |
(1)In the manufacturing of roofing materials - a sheet comprised of bonded glass fibers prior to being saturated with bitumen; (2) short for asphalt or coal tar saturated fiberglass felt membrane. |
| Glaze Coat |
(1) The uppermost layer of asphalt on a smooth-surfaced built-up roof membrane, usually a reflective surfacing is installed over it; (2) A thin coat of bitumen applied to help protect the roof membrane when application of additional felts or the flood coat and aggregate surfacing are delayed. |
| Grain |
A unit of measure for the mass of moisture: a unit of weight equal to 0.002285 ounces or 0.036 dram. |
| Granule |
A small aggregate, naturally or synthetically colored, used to surface cap sheets, shingles, and other granule-surfaced roof coverings. |
| Grout |
A thin mortar used to fill cracks in masonry and tile. Grout is generally composed of a mixture of water, cement, sand, often color tint, and sometimes fine gravel (if it is being used to fill the cores of cement blocks). It is applied as a thick liquid and hardens over time, much like mortar. |
| Grout (Non shrink) |
A cementitious material used to partially fill penetration pockets (pitch pans). A pourable sealer is used afterward. |
| Gutter |
A channel (usually sheet metal) installed along the downslope perimeter of a roof to convey runoff water from the roof to the drain leaders or downspouts. |
